President Donald Trump has signed a memorandum directing the implementation of retaliatory tariffs against countries that impose digital service taxes on U.S. technology companies.

The directive orders the U.S. Trade Representative's office to renew investigations into digital service taxes (DSTs) that were initiated during Trump's first term and to examine additional countries that employ digital taxes 'to discriminate against U.S. companies.'

Instead of empowering their own workers and economics, foreign governments have increasingly exerted extraterritorial authority over American companies, particularly in the technology sector, hindering these companies' success and appropriating revenues that should contribute to our nation's well-being, not theirs, states the memorandum.

The affected nations include Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Canada, Turkey, India, and Austria, which have implemented taxes on revenues earned by American tech giants such as Google, Meta, Apple, and Amazon for digital services sold within their borders.

According to White House documentation, Canada and France each collect more than $500 million annually from U.S. companies through these digital service taxes.

This action follows the Biden administration's previous handling of the issue in 2021, when it announced but suspended 25% tariffs on over $2 billion worth of imports from six countries to allow for diplomatic negotiations. Those talks resulted in a proposed 15% global corporate minimum tax, which was never ratified by Congress.

The new memorandum could reactivate these suspended retaliatory duties, which were originally designed to offset the amount of digital service taxes collected by these nations.

Federal officials are downplaying concerns about a potential connection between mysterious drone sightings over New Jersey and New York, and a small amount of missing radioactive medical equipment. The speculation emerged after Belleville, NJ Mayor Michael Melham suggested the drones might be searching for radioactive material that went missing on December 2nd.

According to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the missing item is an Eckert & Ziegler model HEGL-0132, a standard piece of medical equipment containing a small amount of Germanium-68 used in cancer scanning equipment. The material, classified as 'less than Category 3' radioactive material by the NRC, is 'very unlikely to cause permanent injury to individuals.'

The shipment was destined for the Nazha Cancer Center when it arrived with a damaged and empty container. While Mayor Melham highlighted this incident during an appearance on 'Good Day New York,' federal authorities maintain there is no connection to the ongoing drone activity.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby has stated that many reported drone sightings are actually manned aircraft operating legally. The Department of Homeland Security and FBI have begun deploying drone detection technology and infrared cameras to investigate the situation, though they maintain there is no immediate threat to public safety.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas acknowledged the drone sightings but called for Congress to better resource departments involved in drone detection and provide state and local authorities with improved capabilities to counter potential malicious drone activity.

The drone sightings, which began in mid-November, have sparked concern among residents and local officials across New Jersey and New York, leading to calls for greater transparency from federal authorities regarding the nature and purpose of the aerial activities.

U.S. intelligence officials have warned that Russia may be preparing to launch another experimental Oreshnik missile against Ukraine in the coming days, marking a potential second deployment of this new intermediate-range ballistic weapon system.

According to a U.S. official speaking on condition of anonymity, while the Oreshnik missile represents Russia's latest military technology, it is viewed more as an intimidation tactic rather than a battlefield game-changer. The official noted that Russia possesses only a limited number of these missiles, which carry smaller warheads compared to other missiles in Russia's arsenal.

The Oreshnik, an experimental type of intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) based on Russia's RS-26 Rubezh intercontinental ballistic missile, was first used against the Ukrainian city of Dnipro on November 21. Surveillance footage captured dramatic fireballs striking targets at remarkable speeds during this initial deployment.

Following the November attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin took the unusual step of addressing his nation on television to showcase the new hypersonic missile. He issued a warning to Western nations, suggesting that future deployments could target NATO allies who have provided Ukraine with long-range missile capabilities.

The potential deployment comes amid escalating tensions and recent changes to Russia's military doctrine. Putin recently signed a revised version of Russia's nuclear doctrine that reduces the threshold for nuclear weapon use, allowing for potential nuclear responses even to conventional attacks supported by nuclear powers.

Intermediate-range missiles like the Oreshnik can travel between 500 to 5,500 kilometers (310 to 3,400 miles). These weapons were previously prohibited under a Soviet-era treaty that both Washington and Moscow abandoned in 2019.

U.S. officials maintain that while the Oreshnik represents advanced military technology, it is primarily intended to 'terrorize Ukraine' and will not significantly alter the course of the conflict.

Nearly three decades after the brutal murder of 6-year-old JonBenét Ramsey shocked the nation, her father John Ramsey continues pushing for advanced DNA testing that he believes could finally solve the case.

On December 26, 1996, JonBenét was found murdered in the basement of her family's Colorado home hours after her mother Patsy discovered a ransom note demanding $118,000. The autopsy revealed the child beauty pageant star had been sexually assaulted, strangled with a garrote, and suffered a devastating blow to her skull.

While the case garnered intense media attention and scrutiny, no one has ever been charged with JonBenét's murder. Her parents spent years under what police called an "umbrella of suspicion," facing accusations that damaged their reputation despite DNA evidence in 2008 clearing them of involvement.

Now, John Ramsey is advocating for testing of six to seven pieces of evidence, including the garrote used to strangle JonBenét, using modern genetic genealogy and advanced DNA technology. "If it stays in the hands of the Boulder Police, it will not be solved, period," Ramsey told PEOPLE magazine. "If they accept help, all the help that's out there, that's available and offered, it will be solved."

The Boulder Police Department has assembled the Colorado Cold Case Review Team to examine the original investigation. They are working with leading DNA experts to analyze remaining samples using the latest forensic techniques. The evidence includes over 21,000 tips, 1,000 interviews, and DNA samples from more than 200 people.

Despite the tragic loss of his wife Patsy to cancer in 2006 and decades of waiting for answers, John Ramsey remains determined to find his daughter's killer. "We're not asking them to do anything weird," he said. "Just do your job. Test the DNA."
