RUSSIA LISTS DEMANDS FOR UKRAINE PEACE SETTLEMENT, INCLUDING DEMILITARIZATION AND SANCTIONS LIFT

Russia Lists Demands for Ukraine Peace Settlement, Including Demilitarization and Sanctions Lift

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has outlined Moscow's demands for a peace deal to end its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, emphasizing conditions that could significantly reshape the geopolitical landscape of Eastern Europe [1][2].

According to Lavrov's statement to Hungarian publication Magyar Nemzet, Russia's key demands include:

Demilitarization and neutrality of Ukraine International recognition of territories occupied by Russia Lifting of sanctions against Russia Protection for ethnic Russians and Russian culture in Ukraine

"These provisions must be included in a legally binding agreement for peaceful settlement," Lavrov stated [2].

The Russian Foreign Minister also emphasized the need to address what Moscow perceives as a security threat posed by NATO's expansion, particularly the potential inclusion of Ukraine in the alliance [1].

In addition to these demands, Lavrov mentioned the goals of Ukraine's "denazification" and the withdrawal of all lawsuits against Russia, as well as the return of Russian assets "illegally seized in the West" [3].

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has been attempting to broker peace between the warring nations. However, his recent efforts appear to have hit a roadblock. Following a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump expressed disappointment, stating that he did not believe Moscow was genuinely interested in ending the conflict [1][2].

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has countered Russia's peace overtures, pointing to ongoing Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities as evidence of Putin's true intentions. Zelensky argues that these attacks demonstrate Russia's commitment to continuing the war until forced to stop [1].

The outlined demands and ongoing military actions highlight the significant challenges in reaching a peaceful resolution to the conflict. As international tensions persist and sanctions continue to impact Russia's economy, the path to a mutually acceptable peace agreement remains uncertain.

The situation continues to evolve, with global implications for security, economics, and diplomatic relations. As peace talks progress, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that can bring stability to the region and end the prolonged conflict.

Russia Lists Demands for Ukraine Peace Settlement, Including Demilitarization and Sanctions Lift

Russia Lists Demands for Ukraine Peace Settlement, Including Demilitarization and Sanctions Lift(Quality: 8)

Yesterday at 10:14 AM | International Relations

Ukrainian Lawmaker Withdraws Trump's Nobel Peace Prize Nomination Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Ukrainian Lawmaker Withdraws Trump's Nobel Peace Prize Nomination Amid Russia-Ukraine Conflict(Quality: 8)

June 24 at 1:24 PM | Politics

In a significant turn of events, Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksandr Merezhko has withdrawn his Nobel Peace Prize nomination for former U.S. President Donald Trump. The decision comes amidst ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, casting doubt on Trump's ability to broker peace in the region [1][2].

Merezhko, who heads Ukraine's parliamentary foreign committee, initially nominated Trump for the prestigious award in November 2024. However, on June 24, 2025, he rescinded the nomination, citing a loss of faith in Trump's capacity to end the conflict [2].

"I have lost any sort of faith and belief" in Trump and his ability to secure a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, Merezhko told Newsweek [2]. The lawmaker's decision was influenced by Trump's perceived inaction in response to recent large-scale strikes on the Ukrainian capital.

Trump, who returned to the White House in January 2025, had pledged to end the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours of taking office [1][2]. Despite this promise, peace talks have made little progress, with Russia yet to agree to a U.S.-proposed peace plan that Ukraine accepted in March [1].

Critics have accused Trump of attempting to foster closer ties with Russia while avoiding punitive measures against the country [1]. Merezhko expressed disappointment in Trump's approach, stating, "He has chosen the path of appeasement" [2].

The withdrawal of Trump's Nobel Peace Prize nomination underscores the complexities of the ongoing conflict and the challenges faced in diplomatic efforts to bring about a resolution. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community remains focused on finding a path to peace in the region.

Global Diplomats Meet in Jordan to Chart Syria's Post-Assad Future

Global Diplomats Meet in Jordan to Chart Syria's Post-Assad Future(Quality: 9)

December 14, 2024 at 9:43 AM | International

Top diplomats from the United States, Arab League, and Turkey convened in Jordan's port city of Aqaba on Saturday to discuss Syria's transition following the fall of Bashar Assad's government. The high-level meeting, which brought together 12 foreign ministers and senior officials from the European Union and United Nations, aimed to forge consensus on priorities for Syria's new leadership.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, concluding his regional tour, emphasized the broad agreement among partners regarding key requirements for Syria's future government. These include ensuring inclusivity, protecting women's and minority rights, rejecting terrorism, and securing and destroying suspected chemical weapons stockpiles from the Assad era.

The gathering occurs against the backdrop of regional instability, with ongoing conflicts in Gaza and tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Notably absent from the discussions were Syrian representatives, highlighting the complex nature of the transition process.

UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pederson stressed two critical priorities: establishing a credible and inclusive political process that unites all Syrian communities, and preventing the collapse of state institutions while ensuring swift humanitarian assistance delivery.

The Jordanian Foreign Ministry outlined the meeting's objectives, focusing on supporting a Syrian-led political process that would preserve the nation's unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty while protecting citizens' rights. This diplomatic initiative represents a crucial step in determining Syria's future following the end of the Assad family's half-century rule.

UK PM Starmer Pledges 'Ironclad Support' for Ukraine in Calls with Zelensky Before Trump Meeting(Quality: 8)

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reaffirmed Britain's 'ironclad support' for Ukraine during a phone call with President Volodymyr Zelensky, ahead of Starmer's upcoming meeting with former US President Donald Trump in Washington DC.

The conversation took place as Ukraine marks the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion, with both leaders acknowledging the significance of this moment for Ukraine and European security.

The Prime Minister began by reiterating the UK's ironclad support for Ukraine and commitment to securing a just and enduring peace to bring an end to Russia's illegal war, according to a Downing Street spokesperson.

In a subsequent call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Starmer discussed the necessity of securing lasting peace in Ukraine, with both leaders agreeing that Europe must increase its efforts to ensure collective European security.

During his conversation with Zelensky, Starmer emphasized that Ukraine must remain central to any peace negotiations, stating that protecting Ukraine's sovereignty is crucial to preventing future Russian aggression. The Prime Minister confirmed he would advance these discussions during his upcoming visit to Washington DC.

Both leaders agreed to maintain close communication and continue working with allies to achieve 'peace through strength,' highlighting the unified approach to addressing the ongoing conflict.

Russia to Launch Yars ICBM in Apparent Show of Force, Ukrainian Intelligence Reports

Russia to Launch Yars ICBM in Apparent Show of Force, Ukrainian Intelligence Reports(Quality: 7)

May 18 at 10:08 AM | Defense & Military

Ukraine's military intelligence agency (GUR) reported on Sunday that Russia plans to conduct a 'training and combat' launch of an RS-24 Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the Sverdlovsk region [1][2]. The launch, scheduled for the night of May 19, 2025, is viewed as an apparent attempt to intimidate Ukraine and Western nations [1][2][3].

According to the GUR, the missile will be equipped with a training warhead and launched by the 433rd unit of the 42nd Regiment, 31st Division of Russia's Strategic Rocket Forces [2]. The launch site is reportedly near the village of Svobodny in the Sverdlovsk region [2][4].

'In order to demonstratively pressure and intimidate Ukraine, and also EU and NATO member states, the aggressor state of Russia intends to make a 'training and combat' launch of the RS-24 intercontinental ballistic missile from the Yars complex,' the GUR stated on Telegram [1][3].

The RS-24 Yars is a solid-fuel ICBM with a reported range exceeding 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) [1][2][3]. Adopted by Russia in 2009, it has a claimed explosive power equivalent to a million tons of TNT [6].

This planned launch comes amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with the conflict now in its fourth year. Russia has not commented on the report [1][3]. It's worth noting that Russia typically does not disclose information about planned missile tests, considering such details a military secret [1].

The international community, particularly EU and NATO member states, will likely be closely monitoring this development. The launch, if conducted, could be seen as a significant escalation in Russia's military posturing in the region.

As of now, there has been no independent verification of the Ukrainian intelligence claims. The situation continues to evolve, and further updates may be forthcoming from official sources or international observers.
