Trump Revokes Biden's Intelligence Briefings in Retaliatory Move
Denied in cycles of spite
Power's sharp echoes
President Donald Trump announced Friday he is revoking former President Joe Biden's access to classified intelligence briefings, describing the move as retaliation for Biden's similar action against him in 2021.
There is no need for Joe Biden to continue receiving access to classified information. Therefore, we are immediately revoking Joe Biden's security clearances, and stopping his daily intelligence briefings, Trump declared in a social media post.
The decision marks Trump's latest action in what has been characterized as a 'vengeance tour' of Washington that he promised during his campaign. Former presidents traditionally receive intelligence briefings after leaving office as a courtesy, though this access can be restricted at the sitting president's discretion.
Biden had previously ended Trump's intelligence briefings following the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack, citing Trump's 'erratic' behavior at the time. When asked about that decision, Biden stated, I just think that there is no need for him to have the intelligence briefings. What value is giving him an intelligence briefing? What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something?
In justifying his current decision, Trump referenced the recent Hur Report on Biden's handling of classified documents, claiming it showed Biden's poor memory made him untrustworthy with sensitive information. The former president concluded his announcement with the phrase 'JOE, YOU'RE FIRED. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!'
This move follows Trump's pattern of revoking security clearances from various former officials who have criticized him, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Dr. Anthony Fauci. In a related action, Trump also dismissed Colleen Shogan as the archivist of the United States, though she was not in that position during the classified documents controversy that drew Trump's ire toward the National Archives.
